What makes KFL different from other leagues?
KFL emphasizes safety, character development, academics, life lessons, community involvement and a fun environment for kids to learn the game of football. KFL players are rewarded for the academic success as much as their athletic success. KFL is aligned with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Kidcentric Sports to implement character development and life lessons curriculum. KFL does not believe in a "Win At All Cost" approach. KFL's coaches and key volunteers go through a National Volunteer Screening to ensure KFL kids are involved with positive role models. KFL is affiliated with USA Football and the NFL Heads Up program for accountability, additional resources and credibility. All coaches (Head and Assistant) will be trained through the NFL Heads Up Program.
What does the registration fee cover?
All practice equipment, balls, tees, liability insurance, web design and hosting, printing, postage, player's equipment (helmet, shoulder pads, football pants, belt, and game jersey), uniforms (football and cheer) and administration services, just to mention a few.
Where are games played?
All divisions will play home games at various area high school and middle school football fields. At present, KFL has an agreement with the Daviess County Public Schools to utilize the Daviess County High School Field, Apollo High School Field, Burns Middle School Field, College View Middle School Field and Daviess County Middle School Field. We also play at Owensboro High School's Rash Stadium, McLean County High School, and Hancock County High School. We also play at Kentucky Wesleyn College's Steele Stadium. What a treat for kids to play on the same field as middle schoolers, high schoolers and even college athletes! Away games will be played at other area school fields based on participation with KFL. For example, McLean County Football is a member of KFL and will host home games.
When are games played?
All regularly scheduled games are played either on Saturday or Sunday with some games during the weekday evenings. KFL will not play games on either weekend of Fall Break to give families the time off they deserve. All Star games will be announced at a later date. Make up games and playoff games could be played during the week.
How do the playoffs and Championship games work?
All teams go to the playoffs leading to the Championship Game for each division, including Flag.
What age groups are available for football and cheerleading?
KFL has adopted a grade-based and age-protected division format. Kids will be placed in the division based on their grade level. Ages 5 to 8 will be eligible to play Flag (no matter what grade level) in one division. Kids in 1st to 6th grade will be eligible for a tackle division. Based on the number of kids registered in each grade, KFL will choose the divisions and grade groupings. Age cutoffs for football are based on age as of 7/31.
How often do the football and cheer teams practice?
Prior to the season starting 4 practices per week are allowed for tackle and 3 practices per week for Flag. The first two weeks of practice for tackle divisions will be shirt and shorts - no contact allowed. Once the season begins there will be no more than 2 practices per week. All practices are limited to 90 minutes. For All Stars, the limit will be 5 practices per week.
Are there Weight Limits?
There are no weight limits for any child to play except for skilled positions (i.e. QB, running back, WR, LB, CB, S) weight limits. Weigh-ins occur in the beginning of the season.
Is there a Draft?
Yes, there is a draft. Players who are returning from last year will be not have to be drafted -- they will be placed on the same team. However, returning players may enter back into the draft if they choose. New players will automatically be part of the draft. Each child in the draft will participate in the KFL Combine within their playing division for evaluations by coaches. Kids will go through a series of drills similar to the NFL Combine. KFL will then conduct a draft for each team. Players who miss sign ups and the evaluation will be placed on a team based on the draft order that was established.
Will my child get playing time?
Every child will at least start and play the entire game on offense or defense no matter what age group. It is our goal to play kids on both offense and defense. It will be the coach's responsibility to place players in positions that best benefit the team not where the player or parent wants their child to play. Our goal, over playing time, is to teach responsibility, accountability, competitiveness, "out of control" good sportsmanship, playing to and above one's own ability, and to never give up.
Players can be denied playing time for multiple unexcused absences from practices, disciplinary reasons on and off the field, and poor behavior by parents. Coaches will work with KFL Board Members about kids receiving less playing time.
Is a Child Ever Turned Away?
No child is turned away for any reason. Financial scholarship programs are available. If all teams are filled and there are not enough players to field an additional team, a waiting list will be created.
Are there Fund Raisers?
We will let you know if we need to hold fund raisers for the season.
Do parents have to work concession stands?
No. Each school will work their own concessions for games played at their field.
Can I purchase equipment for my child?
KFL will provide equipment to all participants. You may purchase equipment for your child if you desire, but all PURCHASED equipment must be approved by KFL.
What kind of Equipment is used?
KFL uses top-quality Riddell equipment utilizing the highest technology, including air helmets, excellent pads, and first class uniforms.
Are the Coaches Trained?
Yes. Through KFL's affiliation with USA Football and NFL Heads Up Program, KFL's Player Safety Coach will be responsible for each coach becoming certified through the NFL Heads Up Program, which includes on-line training and live clinics. Each coach will also go through a National Volunteer Screening. KFL coaches are measured on how much the kids learn, how much the players improve throughout the season, staying within the rules, sportsmanship, retention, peer evaluation and parent evaluation. Wins are a small measurement of success.
What type of cheer uniform is included with the KFL fee?
1 top, 1 bottom, briefs. 1 bow, 1 pair of socks, and set of poms
Will there be cheerleading practices?
Yes! Your child will be put on a designated squad and assigned to a coach. A meeting will be scheduled to discuss practice dates and times?
Will my child cheer for one specific football team?
Yes.
Will there be a cheerleading competition?
Yes, but it depends on the number of cheerleaders this year. If there is enough we will do a competition. If not, we will have one big routine performance.
Will cheerleading competition require additional practices?
Yes.
What are the Parent's Responsibilities?
Parents, players, and coaches must sign codes of conduct before practice starts that define the expectations from all parties involved.
Is KFL a part of a larger program?
KFL is affiliated with USA Football (www.usafootball.com) and the NFL Heads Up Program (http://usafootball.com/#headsup). KFL believes in securing affiliations with national organizations for accountability, additional resources, and giving KFL kids a chance to play games at a regional and national level.
